I noticed that FP is getting crappier and crappier each day, with more of Tavarish and Alanis King’s clickbait, as well as more of those stupid buyers guides. Fortunately, there’s still Jason and Raph to give good ol’ fashioned random, weird, and sometimes bullshit content. Those are just my two cents. What do/don’t you like about FP?

at the end of the day, its still a business right? the buyer guides actually make a lot of sense (and I dig them..even if the last like 10 have just been SUV’s)
Oppo is the way it is because we dont need to make money. this is our fun. Jalopnik, its their lively hood. so they cant always have everything we/they want.

True, Jalopnik is for profit, but the buyers guides appeal more to a Consumer Reports audience than a Jalop/Oppo/Enthusiast audience, in my opinion. There’s nothing wrong with that, except no one who would read CR is going to go to Jalopnik for advice.

the jalop/oppo/enthusiant crowd? WE are the minority. the biggest # of click comes from the masses. the consumers. not the enthusiasts. by having a buyer guide that shows up on google (because, lets be real here. 90% of the people who DO buy those cars look them up online to see if it comes in a nice color, then whats the best lease deal they can get), they re-direct some of those clicks that would have gone to motortrend or R&T to them.
THEY are the main source of income. not us. Its high time we accepted this.

Right, but Jalopnik was always a place where the car enthusiasts, a minority, could go and read articles about all of the wacky cars they wanted to. That’s what made Jalopnik good; it covered all sorts of enthusiasts, whether you wanted to read about McLarens or Citroens. Unlike the forums, the commentors were general respectful, and it covered everything, not just a niche make, model, or genre like all of the other websites. Now, we’re watching Jalopnik turn into a Gawker Media cash cow, which leaves Oppo as the sole website that carries the original Jalopnik mantra.

The only bad parts about the FP seem to be directly influenced by the worst parts of Gawker. Clickbait, cross-posts, and a willingness to milk a series of articles way past what is necessary as long as they keep getting clicks.
The Buyer’s Guides I actually don’t mind, and the idea of a pricing guide for “average enthusiasts” who actually would autocross is appealing and useful. I just wish they weren’t in an article/blog format, which is extremely inefficient, Put it in a wiki format or something so people browse and compare reviews easier.

You came to a question about possible dislikes on the FP you have to expect some negativity. This is my negative comment. Foxtrot while great is another example of something that has nothing to do with the original purpose of the website, to write about cars. Jalopnik does a great job of getting info out faster than most which is why I still like to read the website but I think the the bikes and nat security are a bit of a spam. Obviously, I’m going to strongly disagree that our website is “getting crappier and crappier each day.” Sorry to hear the site isn’t exactly what you want, exactly all of the time. But here are some big wins and improvements we’ve had this year:
-Our new video arm has turned out awesome stuff from scratch, like Jason Drives and Jalopnik Investigates
-Bigger and better stories, including good investigative journalism, like this and this and this (and so much more)
-Better visuals, better photography
-Still doing fun, insane, ridiculous stuff from Raph and Jason, like you mentioned!
- More bikes because bikes are awesome!
- COTD is back!!!
And a lot else I don’t have time to list. I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve done this year.
It sounds like you don’t like Buyer’s Guides, Gawker deals and ads; fair enough, and who really likes ads? But that stuff makes money. It’s how we pay for our salaries and health insurance and have a budget to do the cool things you readers get everyday.
It also pays for Oppo, too. Image hosting and server space ain’t free. I know it may seem like all of this stuff just magically appears on the Internet sometimes, but there are real people working hard to make it happen.
As always, suggestions welcome on how we can do better.

The appearance of the buyer’s guide is disturbing. Even more disturbing is they seem to be embarrassed about this series, the author is “Jalopnik Staff”. Some credit must be due, however. When they reviewed the Jeep Compass I half expected them to write it as if FCA PR was looking over their shoulder, but they did pretty much say the Crapass is crap and no, you shouldn’t buy one.
Tavarish’s posts have long since slipped into parodies of themselves. “Why buy a Mustang When You Can Buy 10,000 lbs of Potatoes?”
Doug DeMuro’s writing has improved from its highschool freshman levels to that of a highschool senior, but he still has a tendency to ramble on for 6 paragraphs before he gets to the point.
The irony is that Gawker media’s writers almost went on strike over pay and conditions, and yet these same writers take our articles here on Oppo and put them up on the FP without so much as a by-your-leave. I earn 100,000 views for an article, bringing those eyeballs to their advertisers, and I don’t even get a thank-you. I guess access to a platform where thousands can read your words is thank-you enough.

Yes I often wonder how many people avoid Jalopnik due to its close proximity to Gawker and all those radicals. Some days it gets so bad I think that Jalopnik is a bate and switch site for Gawker. On days when it gets really bad I only go to Jalopnik as a means to get the related topics menu so I can get over to Lanesplitter, The Garage, Blackflag and other more on topic sites. I can deal with the trending window up top, but the articles that are way, way off topic for Jalopnik just have no place.
